El Ultimo Refugio Restaurant in Isla Colon

Good food is something you can easily find in Bocas del Toro. But a great atmosphere where you immediatly feel like your at home? Well that’s something a bit more tricker. Fortunatly for Bocas del Toro there is one restaurant that has been getting more attention and finally found its way on Bocas Panama. Tucked away on a road where most people just plainly forget about visiting is located El Ultimo Refugio, directly looking at the Bocas Marina. El Ultimo Refugio has been open for about three years now and since then has been a local expat favorite. The menu changes on daily basis offering the freshest produce everyday.

The colors, the flavors, and overall presentation of the plates are outstanding. Everything from the pastas to large salads made with 100% organic vegetables and greens, to delicious appetizers are on the menu- all prepared at the restaurant. The restaurant owner, ex D.C. resident Katherine D., is always researching and preparing dishes that combine Caribbean color and spice with popular dishes that we all grew up enjoying. She has throughout the year played a large part into crafting what El Ultimo Refugio is today, and like most people who were eating around me, we were all astonished by the awesome detail to spice and fruit that was carefully crafted into each dish.

The atmosphere reminds me a lot of Fridays when it’s someone’s birthday and theres lots of laughter and singing. El Ultimo Refugio has live music almost everyday during high season and has the BEST bar in Bocas del Toro. More selection of fine liquor, whiskey’s, Rye, and vodkas than any other in the whole Bocas Town. The prices are excellent. Discover Passion Fruit Margaritas, prepared with fresh limes and passion fruit syrup (made at the bar). Showed up with a group? Ask the bartender to make a round of shots, they have tons to choose from all made with delicious local fruit and flavored vodkas. The bar is comfortable and there is always a group of local expats starting up some funny conversation. The place is not your average quiet romantic get away, however its possible to get the place to yourself. Be prepared for lots of laughter, good tunes, awesome drinks, cute bartenders, and excellent food.

Careening Cay Resort in Isla Carenero

The Careening Cay Resort is one of the nicest places I have been in Bocas del Toro. There’s nothing like it. I ended up staying there because of a business meeting and I have to say, I loved it. Careening Cay resort is located in the heart of Bocas del Toro and it is one of the most well known resorts in all Bocas. The place is incredibly big. There is so much going on, so many people; you won’t be able to do everything in one weekend.

So trust me, you might find yourself going back that same year.

Rooms at the Careening Cay are quite pricey; they don’t go lower than $100 USD.  The rooms are beautiful and feel comfortable. The decorations are very nice. They give that beach kind of look mixed with a family and even a corporate feel. Doesn’t sound like a good mix but once you get there, you’ll definitely understand where I’m coming from. The service at this resort is five stars. In my opinion, these guys really know how to treat their guests and they definitely made me feel like a king. The last time I was there, I was missing a towel and before I even rang them, somebody was already knocking on my door. I am not sure how they did it, but they brought me a towel and apologized.

If you’re going to visit the Careening Cay Resort, make sure you make reservations and go during the summer. Even though things might get a little pricey, you will want to enjoy the beach at its best.
